It's been a long time coming, but finally it's been confirmed: Barbara
Hulanicki will return as a designer to Biba, the fashion label she
founded in London 50 years ago and that became a mecca for fashion
lovers during the Sixties and Seventies.
The 78-year-old designer has revealed that she will be designing a
capsule range for her old brand, which will hit the shop floor next
autumn, after signing a consultancy deal with House of Fraser.
If there was one label that defined Swinging London, it was Biba.
Everyone from Marianne faithful to Princess Anne (the only time the shop
was closed for business was for HRH) visited Hulanicki's store. Not
only did it create clothes that everyone wanted to wear, but it was
forward-thinking in its attitude toward working mothers, housing a
creche in the store, too.
'I've got Biba running through my veins,' Hulanicki said after the news
of her return was revealed. The designer parted ways with the label in
1975 and has not been back at the helm since, until now. Earlier this
year Hulanicki told the Guardian that that period of her life was
'heartbreaking.'
While we're hoping for some classic Biba looks to be revisited, we also
know that Ms Hulanicki is a rebel at heart. Either way we know we're
definitely not going to want to miss out on whatever Hulanicki
designs...
